Trainee Diver - Entry Level Training

The most likely starting point for Trainee Divers is the Experience Scuba session (otherwise known as a Try Dive or Suck-It-&-See) where there is the opportunity to try out some SCUBA gear in the pool with an Instructor, breath underwater, and have a taste of what it's all about!

OUUEG aims to bring Trainees through to the BSAC Sports Diver Qualification. To achieve Sports Diver, the Ocean Diver Qualification also has to be achieved. BSAC's more advanced Diver and Instructor qualifications are entirely separate and there is no need or requirement to progress in that direction unless so desired.

The aim and gearing of OUUEG's Diver Training Program is to move Trainees starting in Michaelmas Term through to Sports Diver level by the end of Easter Training each Academic Year. To achieve this goal we split each qualification into two distinct areas - theory lessons, and pool/openwater training.

Ocean Diver has a much longer duration than Sports Diver in terms of both theory and pool training, so we aim to finish Ocean Diver theory and pool stuff in the first term. This consists of eight theory sessions together with six pool sessions. We will include as much Sports Diver as you and we can manage before Christmas as well, followed up with revision where needed, and sometmes a little repetition where required!!

Each trainee diver receives a BSAC training pack which includes:

N.B. Attendance at theory lectures and pool sessions is compulsory (unless your motorbike dies or other extremely good excuse), as it is unfair on our Instructor's time to have to organise repeat lectures or pool sessions for just one or two people.

Ocean Diver Training Costs

One year’s membership of OUUEG and BSAC, third party insurance, training materials, theory lessons, pool training, open water training, two days’ diving, including all necessary kit hire and air fills – all for an inclusive £250!!

Sports Diver Training

This course is designed to build upon skills learnt during the Ocean Diver course, allowing you to dive more deeply and at more advanced sites.

Pool training is included in the Ocean Diver programme above.
Theory lessons will continue in Hilary term until complete.
Open water training will be completed at the annual Easter training trip in Dorset.

Sports Diver Training Costs

No additional charges are payable for the pool or theory training.

Sports Diver Open water training ineeds to be completed at sea on a Club Dive Trip so although normal Trip, kit hire and air fill charges are payable, there is again no additional charge for Sports Diver instruction! As a guide, we would expect four days of our Easter Training Trip (ET) - usually enough to complete Sports Diver Open Water dives - to cost around £200 including food, kit hire, air, boat charges, travel and accommodation.
